This is symptomatic of a
firewall blocking the necessary TCP/IP ports that Microsoft's
NetMeeting requires for call negotiations. This will more commonly
occur when attempting to call from work rather than from dialup
residential accounts. If you are calling from work and are receiving
this error, then perhaps you might be using firewall to connect to
the Internet. It this case you must configure NetMeeting connection
ports with the following configuration:
Pass through primary TCP
connections on ports 389, 522, 1503, 1720, and 1731. Pass through
secondary TCP and UDP connections on dynamically assigned ports
(1024-65535).
In NetMeeting, two UDP ports
are determined on each side of the firewall for audio and video
streaming for a total of four ports for inbound and outbound audio
and video.
NetMeeting directory services
requires port 389. Microsoft Internet Locator Service (ILS) servers,
which support the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for
NetMeeting, also require port 389.
If you are from your
residential ISP, still you can try sending an email to your ISP
company regarding the necessary TCP/IP ports being open.
| How do I make a call from
behind a firewall? |
This question generally
pertains to business users. If you are dialing up an Internet
Service Provider to get to the Internet, then it's highly likely
that everything will work correctly. Business users usually sit
behind a device called a firewall. This black box selectively allows
for certain traffic to flow back and forth between the Internet and
your Local Area Network. Your system administrator usually manages
this device and only allows certain traffic to flow for security
reasons.
If you use a firewall to
connect to the Internet, it must be configured so that the IP ports
are not blocked. To establish outbound NetMeeting connections
through a firewall, the firewall must be configured to do the
following:
Pass through primary TCP
connections on ports 389, 522, 1503, 1720, and 1731. Pass through
secondary TCP and UDP connections on dynamically assigned ports
(1024-65535).
The H.323 call setup protocol
dynamically negotiates a TCP port for use by the H.323 call control
protocol. Also, both the audio call control protocol and the H.323
call setup protocol dynamically negotiate UDP ports for use by the
H.323 streaming protocol, called the Real-Time Transfer Protocol
(RTP). In NetMeeting, two UDP ports are determined on each side of
the firewall for audio and video streaming, for a total of four
ports for inbound and outbound audio and video. These dynamically
negotiated ports are selected arbitrarily from all ports that can be
assigned dynamically. A NetMeeting directory service requires port
389.
Microsoft Internet Locator
Service (ILS) servers, which support the Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol (LDAP) for NetMeeting, also require port 389.
Click on Hang up button to end the call.
| When I try to place a
call, it says "User did not accept your call". What to
